Some Helpful Tips
Many children do want to do well academically but find themselves
torn between unwritten codes such as - it is not cool to
be good at school, and their own desires to achieve. Children
do not want to loose face with their peers but they do not
like feeling ‘dumb’ either.
Saving face with their peers is a priority for most children and
teenagers.
How can parents help turn this around?
- Share your concerns with your child openly, honestly and
without blame
- Ask your child what his/her main problems are preventing
learning
- Collaborate & problem solve together to find solutions
- Support your child and keep any new plans for academic improvement
a ‘secret’ from others.
This will help demonstrate that you care and are willing to
try to understand things from your child’s perspective,
create a supportive team approach and work towards a common goal. |
